Oyster farmers from Casamance immerse in Joal-Fadiouth
To promote the oyster farming sector in Casamance, Wetlands International Africa – West Coast and Gulf of Guinea (WIACO) organized an exchange visit between producer groups from Ziguinchor and the Mboga Yaayde Joal-Fadiouth economic interest group, considered a national leader in the promotion of fishery products.
Over three days, the participants from the south discovered the methods that have earned the women processors of Joal their renown. The program included harvesting, cooking, preserving, packaging, and marketing oysters.
In Casamance, the potential for shellfish farming is enormous. Development partners have already introduced modern techniques for oyster and mussel farming. But the major challenge remains processing and marketing. It is precisely on this aspect that the Mboga Yaay EIG, drawing on its experience, shared its expertise with its counterparts.
For WIACO, this initiative is part of a broader vision: to support local communities in developing income-generating activities, while supporting the conservation and restoration of wetlands.
