who are we ?

Wetlands International Africa – West Coast and Gulf of Guinea (WIACO) is a member entity of the global Wetlands International network, the only global non-profit organization dedicated to wetland conservation and restoration. Since 1998, WIACO has been designing and implementing conservation and restoration programs in West Africa and the Gulf of Guinea, collaborating with public, private, and community stakeholders. Most of our work is funded on a project basis by governments and private donors.

Our vision

A world where wetlands are cherished and nurtured for their beauty, the life they support, and the resources they provide.

Our Mission

The strategic framework also defines our theory of change. This theory of change is structured around three elements: inspire, mobilize, and scale up.

INSPIRING: This involves creating the conditions for action in favor of wetlands;

MOBILIZING: This involves enabling the actions of other stakeholders and creating the conditions for scaling up solutions;

SCALE UP: This involves facilitating the adoption of solutions on a large scale by stakeholders and society for a broad impact over time and across the subregion.

OUR STRATEGIC FRAMEWORK

Our strategic framework defines our areas of intervention corresponding to three key ecosystems: deltas and coastal areas, rivers and lakes, and peatlands. Within these three areas of intervention, we seek three impacts: healthy wetlands, resilient communities, and reduced climate risks.
