Arid wetlands are vital water stores in otherwise uninhabitable landscapes. <\/span>They fortify the capacity of local people in surviving droughts and fighting desertification. <\/span>A changing climate and reduced river flows due to upstream diversions are putting these wetlands and the communities they support at risk. <\/span>We improve resilience to disasters by protecting and rehabilitating the wetland ecosystems on which people depend.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Climate change poses serious threats to the Eastern Africa region. <\/span>It is expected to exacerbate existing <\/span><\/span>
\nrisks such as water stress and food security. <\/span>Climate models predict a temperature increase of 3-4 <\/span><\/span>
\ndegrees Centigrade as well as changes in rainfall patterns across Africa resulting in frequent drought <\/span><\/span>
\nand flood events and an intensification of natural variabilities. <\/span>A rise in sea level represents a threat to <\/span><\/span>
\nthe region through salt water intrusion and coastal erosion (Nassef et al., 2009). <\/span>Future warming is <\/span><\/span>
\nlikely to be the greatest in the semi-arid regions and is expected to contribute to increased vulnerability <\/span><\/span>
\nof populations.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Ecosystem-based approaches are therefore important because they involve a range of <\/span><\/span>
\nmanagement activities to reduce vulnerability to climate change and physical exposure to <\/span><\/span>
\nhazards and to increase the socio-economic resilience of people and communities by sustaining local <\/span><\/span>
\nlivelihoods and providing essential goods such as food and water. <\/span>Such approaches include Integrated Water Resource Management (IWRM) and sustainable wetlands management interventions. <\/span>Well managed wetlands and other ecosystems act as natural infrastructure against climate change impacts.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
