{"id":3262,"date":"2021-11-17T10:07:47","date_gmt":"2021-11-17T10:07:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/westafrica.wetlands.org\/en\/blog\/wetlands-and-nature-take-centre-stage-at-glasgow-climate-talks\/"},"modified":"2023-11-03T11:04:12","modified_gmt":"2023-11-03T11:04:12","slug":"wetlands-and-nature-take-centre-stage-at-glasgow-climate-talks","status":"publish","type":"wl_blog","link":"https:\/\/westafrica.wetlands.org\/en\/blog\/wetlands-and-nature-take-centre-stage-at-glasgow-climate-talks\/","title":{"rendered":"Wetlands and Nature take centre stage at Glasgow climate talks"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">Growing realisation that without enabling nature to recover, including wetlands, there is no 1.5C future<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/h2>\n<h3><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">COP26\u00a0was\u00a0very\u00a0much\u00a0the Nature COP\u00a0<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">With nature and water\u00a0firmly in\u00a0the COP26 agenda,\u00a0nature\u2019s role\u00a0on\u00a0the path to 1.5\u00b0C\u00a0was\u00a0given space in dialogues and\u00a0pledges\u00a0like\u00a0never before.\u00a0Greater attention\u00a0to\u00a0natural climate solutions\u00a0has been stimulated\u00a0by scientific insights\u00a0revealing\u00a0that<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0stewardship and restoration of forests and wetlands,\u00a0plus a shift to regenerative agriculture<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0can provide around 30% of the climate change mitigation needed to achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement. 92% of countries\u2019 new climate action plans now include measures to tackle nature loss; an encouraging sign that more countries are listening to the science and recognising the crucial role of nature must play to address the global climate crisis.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">We saw commitments and financing for forests and oceans; incentivising protection and disincentivising degradation.\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/science-environment-59088498\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Major announcements\u00a0by world leaders<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0early during COP26 saw\u00a0agreements\u00a0to halt and reverse deforestation,\u00a0which could mean\u00a0more\u00a0finance\u00a0dedicated\u00a0towards\u00a0accelerating the shift to lowering\u00a0CO2\u00a0in a way\u00a0which is\u00a0nature-positive and\u00a0helps build a\u00a0climate resilient future\u00a0for people\u00a0everywhere.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">For the first time, nature made it into a UN climate pact. The\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/unfccc.int\/sites\/default\/files\/resource\/cma2021_L16_adv.pdf\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Glasgow Climate Pact<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0emphasised \u201c<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the importance of protecting, conserving and restoring nature and ecosystems to achieve the Paris Agreement temperature goal, including through forests and other terrestrial and marine ecosystems acting as sinks and reservoirs of greenhouse gases and by protecting biodiversity, while ensuring social and environmental safeguards.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u2026But what\u00a0about wetlands?<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">We entered\u00a0the\u00a0climate\u00a0conference\u00a0knowing that we\u00a0needed\u00a0to\u00a0make sure\u00a0that wetlands aren\u2019t being ignored\u00a0in\u00a0any\u00a0action to limit climate change and\u00a0to\u00a0help people adapt to\u00a0the storms,\u00a0fires,\u00a0droughts, floods and loss of livelihoods that come with\u00a0the\u00a0global\u00a0climate\u00a0emergency. We knew we needed to raise the\u00a0alarm\u00a0that\u00a0wetland loss, poor water management and damaging water infrastructure is likely to continue\u00a0if we don\u2019t have\u00a0political\u00a0will\u00a0and private intervention\u00a0for change.\u00a0Raising the banner of wetlands\u00a0doesn\u2019t end with COP.\u00a0We need\u00a0all\u00a0hands on\u00a0deck as we\u00a0continue to\u00a0push\u00a0for wetland targets in climate action\u00a0within global\u00a0and domestic\u00a0agreements,\u00a0conventions, and\u00a0in NDCs and NAPs.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">That being said<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">,\u00a0wetlands\u00a0gained\u00a0more recognition\u00a0during\u00a0the\u00a0COP26;\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">especially\u00a0on the\u00a0need work together\u00a0to safeguard and restore\u00a0carbon-saturated\u00a0peatlands\u00a0and\u00a0coastal wetlands\u00a0like mangroves\u00a0and sea-grass beds<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0alongside<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0forests.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0This is encouraging,\u00a0however,\u00a0the lack of specific\u00a0commitments\u00a0and targets for\u00a0safeguarding and restoring wetlands, including freshwater\u00a0ones, which\u00a0are under the greatest\u00a0threat, leaves them vulnerable to further degradation, with\u00a0negative consequences for\u00a0mitigation and\u00a0adaptation.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Our\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/opinions\/2021\/10\/31\/restoring-wetlands-can-help-combat-climate-change\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">op-ed<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> published by Al Jazeera ahead of COP26 raised the importance of wetlands and set the tone going into the two weeks in Glasgow. To underline this during the COP, Jane Madgwick, CEO of Wetlands International, was part of a live news segment on Al-Jazeera, as well as seizing the social media space with a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/WetlandsInt\/status\/1456315896503406592\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Facebook Live<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0to talk about the value of wetlands.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/WetlandsInt\/status\/1457749778557767696\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Watch<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0Jane\u00a0reflect\u00a0on her time at COP26.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Peatlands as key to tackling the climate crisis<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Peatlands proved to be a\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/2021\/11\/10\/cop26-peat-carbon\/?utm_source=rss&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_campaign=wp_world\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">hot topic at COP26<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">They were<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/cop26-summit-climate-change-carbon-dioxide-peat-bogs-global-warming\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">spotlighted as carbon megastores<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">with the\u00a0recognition\u00a0that\u00a0peatlands\u00a0must be included\u00a0in\u00a0countries\u2019\u00a0NDCs.\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/news.bloomberglaw.com\/environment-and-energy\/biden-climate-plan-to-save-forests-pivots-on-swamps-wetlands\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Protecting peatlands was also crucial to President Joe Biden\u2019s forest conservation plan announced in Glasgow<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">As our Wetlands International peatlands expert, Hans Schutten, told <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2021-11-09\/cop26-climate-news-scotland-s-peatlands-are-a-carbon-sink-under-threat\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Bloomberg<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">:<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> \u201cThe world is recognising the huge urgency to take action against peatland damage now. We hope it\u2019s more than just words.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">The need to safeguard remaining intact peatlands and restore<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a050 million hectares of peatland by 2050\u00a0to reach net zero\u00a0emissions\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u2013\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">50 by 50<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u2013<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0is\u00a0a daunting\u00a0goal<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">It means that\u00a0it is urgent to\u00a0unlock public and private finance. Going forward, Wetlands International\u00a0intends\u00a0to play a bigger role, working with governments, companies and communities in\u00a0guiding\u00a0landscape recovery<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">and\u00a0in helping to channel financial flows to\u00a0restore peatlands at scale.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">At COP26, Wetlands International co-organised the first-ever\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/storage.net-fs.com\/hosting\/6147066\/7\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Peatland Pavilion<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">,\u00a0which shone\u00a0a light on\u00a0peatlands\u00a0and positioned\u00a0us as a key player\u00a0with a\u00a0proven\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/peatlands.wetlands.org\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">track record<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> of their\u00a0protection and\u00a0rehabilitation;\u00a0significant\u00a0in\u00a0a\u00a0country where peatlands play a crucial role in Scottish biodiversity. The\u00a0pavilion brought\u00a0people\u00a0together to\u00a0underscore the\u00a0urgency\u00a0of\u00a0safeguarding\u00a0and restoring\u00a0peatlands\u00a0for climate, people and nature.\u00a0We\u00a0shared\u00a0field evidence and best practices together with\u00a0many\u00a0governments and companies\u00a0on how we can\u00a0collaborate to\u00a0recover\u00a0the world\u2019s\u00a0peatlands.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">We were\u00a0very\u00a0encouraged by\u00a0the interest shown\u00a0by\u00a0countries\u00a0and states\u00a0across the world\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u2013<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0from Peru, Panama, Suriname\u00a0and Costa Rica\u00a0in\u00a0Latin American countries, Scotland,\u00a0Ireland, the Netherlands, Iceland, Germany and\u00a0Russia\u00a0in\u00a0Europe;\u00a0India\u00a0and\u00a0Indonesia\u00a0in Asia\u00a0and\u00a0the\u00a0DRC\u00a0in Africa.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Canada, which has enormous peatland wealth, committed to increase protection and restoration at home and to support other regions in stepping up peatland action. Everyone recognised<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">the\u00a0importance of<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">indigenous and\u00a0local communities\u00a0being<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">at the heart of<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">efforts to better manage\u00a0peatlands. For many,\u00a0the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">social and\u00a0rural economy\u00a0that\u00a0come\u00a0with\u00a0caring for peatlands\u00a0are important policy drivers<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">More focus on water at COP26<\/span><\/b><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Wetlands International\u00a0contributed to\u00a0organise\u00a0the first-ever\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.waterforclimate.net\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Water Pavilion<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0which helped raise\u00a0the need\u00a0for\u00a0better\u00a0water management<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0in tackling climate change.\u00a0\u00a0Continuing our long-standing participation\u00a0in the\u00a0Marrakech Partnership\u00a0of non-state actors,\u00a0we emphasised the critical role of wetlands in\u00a0contributing\u00a0to resilient water management in NDCs and other national climate adaptation and mitigation initiatives.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Many examples presented in the Water Action Day illustrated how better-managed wetlands contribute to water security and climate resiliency, and how continuing wetland loss is exacerbating the impacts of droughts, fires and floods. Challenges were discussed; such as needing to overcome the siloing<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0of water\u00a0management\u00a0amongst\u00a0various responsible institutions\u00a0(i.e.\u00a0Water Resources Management and WASH services)\u00a0to be more effective in\u00a0climate action.\u00a0Challenges like this<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0will surely be revisited during\u00a0the next COP in Egypt\u00a0where water insecurity is a major issue.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">There are\u00a0an\u00a0increasing number of major initiatives trying to raise awareness\u00a0of,\u00a0and\u00a0divert investment towards climate-water related issues.\u00a0For\u00a0example,\u00a0the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sustainable-markets.org\/taskforces\/resilient-water-accelerator\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Resilient Water Accelerator<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0presents opportunities for us going forward.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0Tools,\u00a0such as the Water Tracker\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">for National Climate Planning, profiled in Glasgow,\u00a0will help countries\u00a0enhance water resilience in national climate plans\u00a0and<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0bring water more\u00a0centrally\u00a0into NDCs.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Unlocking public and private finance,\u00a0<\/span><\/b><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">through voluntary carbon markets<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Real action on climate must include unlocking public and private finance in an inclusive way that benefits nature and local communities. The overall mood at COP26 was an eagerness to make it happen and a willingness to join forces to do so; including through mobilising the vast public and private finance that will be needed. COP26 signals a new beginning in the need to invest in natural climate solutions as a core part of climate action. An Article 6 rulebook agreement \u2013 which was subject to intense negotiations at this COP \u2013 can be a positive step that will activate the necessary finance needed to protect nature and benefit those on the frontlines of the climate emergency while keeping global heating to below 1.5\u00b0C, as agreed in Paris.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">With voluntary private finance involved, greenwashing is a real concern. This is why it\u2019s up to all actors to be vigilant in ensuring environmental integrity and human equity in offset schemes. This is about making sure they are only embedded in high-quality projects that deliver real climate, community and biodiversity benefits that are held to the highest standards. We need to see companies steeply reducing and mitigating emissions\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">and\u00a0<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\">offsetting residual emissions on a pathway to net-zero by 2050. Much more clarity is needed on the latter and we welcome the High-Level Climate Champions\u2019 announcement to address this. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Connecting the climate and biodiversity agendas<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Climate change is helping drive unprecedented nature loss. And we cannot\u00a0enable resiliency\u00a0to even\u00a0a\u00a01.5\u00a0degree\u00a0temperature rise\u00a0without\u00a0ensuring that\u00a0Earth\u2019s\u00a0natural systems\u00a0are\u00a0in better health.\u00a0Because of their crucial role in the carbon and water cycles, it is imperative to step up efforts to improve the condition of\u00a0wetlands\u00a0worldwide, which means\u00a0reducing climate risks, enhancing community resilience and\u00a0recovering biodiversity.\u00a0Whole landscape or basin scale\u00a0initiatives, that foster\u00a0inter-sectoral and transboundary\u00a0collaboration\u00a0for the long-term,\u00a0offer the\u00a0opportunity\u00a0to\u00a0join\u00a0actions\u00a0for climate, biodiversity and sustainable development.\u00a0It was encouraging to\u00a0learn of\u00a0many bold\u00a0initiatives of this kind and to encounter\u00a0a growing number of\u00a0organisations\u00a0and\u00a0donors\u00a0willing to\u00a0engage in\u00a0enabling\u00a0large-scale, long-term\u00a0collaborative\u00a0actions\u00a0of this nature.
