It followed Wetlands International Africa&#8217;s approach, which combines on-the-ground restoration with alternative livelihoods and capacity development, using the Mangrove Conservation Savings and Credit Group (GECCOM) as a tool to develop a savings culture and finance local microenterprises.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-intro-font-size\">In addition, the program promoted environmental education in schools and piloted energy shops and biogas production to meet energy needs impacting mangrove forests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"684\" src=\"https:\/\/westafrica.wetlands.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2025\/05\/image-49.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4770\" srcset=\"https:\/\/westafrica.wetlands.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2025\/05\/image-49.png 1024w, https:\/\/westafrica.wetlands.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2025\/05\/image-49-300x200.png 300w, https:\/\/westafrica.wetlands.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2025\/05\/image-49-768x513.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>With more than convincing results, it was decided to proceed with phase II of the PRC to ensure the sustainability of the achievements. In addition to the four pilot municipalities, this second phase of the project will target two other municipalities, such as Toubacouta and Djirnda.
