\ud83d\udcc5 On May 9, 2025, Djoudj National Bird Park hosted the launch of the LIFEAWOM (Aquatic Warbler On Migration) project, dedicated to the conservation of the Aquatic Warbler, a globally threatened migratory bird species. This ambitious initiative, implemented in Senegal by Wetlands International Africa \u2013 West Africa and Gulf of Guinea (WIACO) \ud83e\udd1d in partnership with the National Parks Directorate (DPN) and the local communities of D\u00e9bi and Tiguet, aims to restore critical habitats and strengthen conservation efforts at the national level.
\ud83c\udfa4 This high-profile event brought together many national and local stakeholders: Sub-prefect of Ross B\u00e9thio, Director of Wetlands International Africa, park management authorities, representatives of D\u00e9bi and Tiguet communities, and several technical and scientific partners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

\ud83d\udde3\ufe0f \u201c\u201dThis project represents a unique opportunity to combine\u00a0local development,\u00a0sustainable wetland management, and\u00a0biodiversity protection. The State will be fully committed to supporting its implementation,\u201d said the Sub-prefect of Ross B\u00e9thio during the opening remarks.
\u2728 The Executive Director of Wetlands International Africa,\u00a0Mr. Ibrahima THIAM, praised the\u00a0commitment of local communities\u00a0and the\u00a0active collaboration of national institutions:
\ud83d\udde8\ufe0f \u201c\u201cBy protecting the Aquatic Warbler\u2019s wintering sites, we are contributing to the preservation of a\u00a0global natural heritage. It is also a chance for communities to\u00a0restore functional ecosystems, which are sources of\u00a0resilience\u00a0and\u00a0livelihoods.\u201d
The workshop made it possible to:
\u2022 Present the project objectives and its action plan through 2029 ;
\u2022 Discuss the threats facing the species and its habitats in Senegal ;
\u2022 Establish a\u00a0National Working Group\u00a0in charge of coordination and monitoring;
\u2022 Celebrate\u00a0World Migratory Bird Day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\ud83d\udea8 This project comes at a critical time: although Senegal is a key wintering site for the species, many of its habitats remain unprotected and highly degraded, especially around Tiguet.
Through AWOM, concrete actions are planned, including:

\ud83c\udf31\u00a0habitat management,
\ud83d\udce3\u00a0community awareness, with a clear and ambitious roadmap to 2029.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
