This donation fills a long-standing technical gap in the honey value chain and is accompanied by a mission to monitor the sector’s performance.

Since 2024, Wetlands International Africa has been supporting communities in the Saloum Delta in diversifying their livelihoods, with a clear objective: to reduce pressure on mangrove ecosystems whilst generating sustainable income. It was with this in mind that the Matyr, Niominka Apiculture, Nanoor and COGER de Diogane economic interest groups (EIGs), along with the Management Committee of the Palmarin Community Nature Reserve (CG-RNCP), received training in modern beekeeping, followed by a provision of beekeeping kits.

Two years later, these groups have gained real experience in managing apiaries. However, the commercialisation of their production faced a practical obstacle: the lack of suitable equipment for extracting and packaging honey, which was affecting yields, product quality and, ultimately, the producers’ incomes.

The monitoring mission carried out in August 2026 provided an accurate overview of beekeeping activity within the six organisations receiving support. The data collected shows that there are 286 members, including 183 women, involved in the sector through 185 active hives. In 2025, these hives yielded a total of 402.5 kg of honey, generating an estimated income of 4,971,000 FCFA for the beneficiary communities.

The Niominka Apiculture Economic Interest Group (GIE) in Niodior stands out in particular, with a production of 275 kg of honey valued at over 3.3 million FCFA, supported by a modern processing unit and a showroom that enable more than 25 women to diversify their activities. The structuring of the sector has also been strengthened by the creation of a beekeepers’ cooperative covering several localities.

In Palmarin, the Matyr and Moundor Economic Interest Groups (EIGs) have established financial solidarity mechanisms for the benefit of their members, notably funds dedicated to the start of the school year and loans for income-generating activities. In Diogane, the establishment of a beekeeping park in an area affected by sand extraction illustrates the role of beekeeping as an economic alternative in the face of environmental pressures, whilst in Mbassis, the Mass Paal group is continuing to develop its still-fledgling activity.

To consolidate these achievements, Wetlands International Africa has provided each of the six beneficiary economic interest groups (GIE) with a manual stainless-steel honey press with a capacity of 10 kg. This is a simple yet crucial piece of equipment: it helps to reduce honey losses during extraction, preserve the product’s quality and increase the quantities actually recovered after each harvest.

Beyond the figures, the mission highlights the cumulative impact of these initiatives on the resilience of households in the Saloum Delta, particularly for women, who make up the majority of the 286 members recorded. By offering a viable economic alternative, the beekeeping sector contributes directly to the PRC’s objective: to reconcile improved local incomes with the conservation of mangrove ecosystems.

With this provision of processing equipment, the beneficiary groups now have the tools they need to take the next step: moving from small-scale production to a more professional approach to honey processing, which will ensure better incomes in future seasons.

As part of the Community Resilience Project (PRC), Wetlands International Africa distributed six stainless-steel manual honey extractors to the beneficiary groups of the beekeeping initiatives in the Saloum Delta between 19 and 24 August 2026.
